OUR HISTORY

South Dallas, located southeast of Downtown, is home to 22 unique neighborhoods and cultural landmarks like Fair Park, the Forest Theater, and the South Dallas Cultural Center. Historically, it housed Black, Jewish, and immigrant communities but faced setbacks due to redlining, segregation, and mid-century highway projects that displaced residents. These factors led to economic decline in the latter half of the 20th century.

Recently, revitalization efforts have sparked renewal, including the restoration of Fair Park and the Forest Theater. In 2021, the area was named a cultural district by the Texas Commission on the Arts. Today, Fair Park remains a hub for the State Fair of Texas, major events, and 14 cultural institutions, boasting Texas’ largest public art collection and iconic Art Deco architecture.

The Fair Park South Dallas Cultural District, managed by Fair Park First, is a designated area recognized by the Texas Commission on the Arts for its rich cultural, historical, and artistic significance. Cultural districts like this foster economic growth, strengthen community engagement, and celebrate local heritage.

Located in South Dallas—a historically Black, Jewish, and immigrant community—the district encompasses landmarks such as Fair Park, the Forest Theater, and the South Dallas Cultural Center. After decades of disinvestment, revitalization efforts have restored key sites, including the 135-year-old Fair Park. Now home to the State Fair of Texas, major events, and 14 cultural institutions, the district boasts the state’s largest public art collection and iconic Art Deco architecture, solidifying its role as a hub for arts, culture, and community.

Nonprofit arts organizations located in the Fair Park South Dallas Cultural District may apply for annual funding through the Cultural District Project (CDP) program. • Recognized as part of the district by district management
